Madeline Porterfield is a New York City based knitwear designer with a profound understanding and deep appreciation for local fibers, ethical and environmental practices, and hand craft.
Growing up moving throughout America, Madeline always had an innate curiosity and infatuation with nature and craft. Though initially she chose to pursue an education in Biological and Environmental Engineering, she ultimately saw opportunity to satiate her interest in ecological solutions using existing systems with creative design. Throughout her time at Parsons, she further developed her inherent respect of knitwear.
Madeline’s collections are anchored on three main tenets- an emphasis on craft and quality, a strong connection between the supplier and the maker, and creating pieces that inspire care and maintenance rather than disposal. All pieces are hand knit by Madeline, with a dedication to sourcing local and ethical materials. She seeks to create intricate and detailed classic pieces that maintain a level of joy and playfulness. Collections are released based on the time that the product and the process require, rather than calendars dictated by industry.
All one-of-a-kind pieces are knit with attention to texture and construction. All garments are developed to honor the natural shapes within the knit stitches and patterns, instead of cutting into the natural motifs.
Madeline believes in building an ongoing relationship between fiber supplier, maker, and owner. The purchase of the product does not signify the end of this relationship, rather the beginning. She encourages buyers to reach out and offers mending for the lifetime of the garment. These garments are made to be long-standing, worn, and repaired.
